  • Nevada taxable sales drop 1.9 percent in May

    CARSON CITY, Nev. AP - Taxable sales in Nevada fell 1.9 percent in May, a small dip from the previous month but a continued reprieve from the double-digit free fall of a year ago, the Nevada Department of Taxation reported Tuesday.Merchants in Nevada sold $3.1 billion in goods, of which $33.1 million was reported under an amnesty program designed to spur taxable sales reporting. Without amnesty, taxables sales would have dropped 2.9 percent, the department said.For the fiscal year, sales have dropped 11.1 percent.Gross sales and use tax collections totaled $248.1 million for the month, a 3.3 percent increase over May 2009. Collections for the 11 months ending June 30 were off 5.7 percent.There were some positive indicators in the report, but others showed Nevada's tourism- and sales-dependent economy remains in a serious slump.The largest increases were posted in accommodations, up 23 percent; clothing and accessories, up 10.7 percent; electronics and appliance stores

AP - Nevada was eliminated Tuesday from consideration for "Race to the Top" education grants, losing out on competing for up to $160 million in federal funding under a program designed to spur innovation in public schools.Eighteen states and the District of Columbia were named finalists in the second round of the school reform grant competition, giving them a chance to win a share of $3 billion.In a written statement, Gov. Jim Gibbons said that while he is disappointed, the application process spurred a coordinated review of Nevada's education system."We appreciate the opportunity the Race to the Top competition gave us to take a long, hard and much overdue look at educating Nevada's children," said Gibbons, a one-term governor who lost in the Republican June primary.   • Washoe County Sheriff's Office to establish 'Tahoe Regional Interoperability Partnership'

    INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The Washoe County Commission has granted the Washoe County Sheriff's Office authority to proceed with plans to establish a bistate region known as the Tahoe Regional Interoperability Partnership - TRIP.The partnership, according to a Tuesday press release from the sheriff's office, will create one of the nation's largest regional partnerships of this kind and perhaps the first region to address interoperable communication issues.According to the sheriff's office, the group will potentially affect a region that includes Western Nevada counties, California counties surrounding Lake Tahoe and most California counties north of Interstate I-80."Since the Angora fire, it became evident that first responders serving the sensitive and challenging environment of Lake Tahoe lacked the most fundamental of tools - the ability to communicate and organize their response efforts," Washoe County Sheriff Mike Haley said in the press rele

    LAS VEGAS AP - Nevada political leaders remembered former Gov. Kenny Guinn at a public funeral Tuesday with a 21-gun salute, bagpipes and a Catholic Mass honoring the two-term moderate Republican who left a big imprint on the Silver State."Our state is sad but extremely grateful," said state Senate Minority Leader Bill Raggio, R-Reno. He remembered Guinn as a selfless leader who rose from sharecropper beginnings to lead Nevada during a period of peril and prosperity.Guinn, who served as the state's chief executive from 1999 to 2007, died Thursday after falling from the roof of his Las Vegas home while making repairs.   • Missing horse rider found Saturday near Tahoe Donner

    TRUCKEE, Calif. - A Reno woman reported missing Friday was found Saturday in the Euer Valley near Tahoe Donner.Patricia Uccio, 46, went missing Friday evening on horseback, according to the group she was camping with in the Euer Valley. The Nevada County Sheriff's Office started a search and rescue effort with about 30 volunteers from Nevada City and Truckee, working on foot and ATV, with aerial assistance from a California Highway Patrol helicopter.The search team found Uccio at about 8:30 a.m. Saturday in a cabin she found. She said her horse had lost footing at about 4 p.m. Friday and she fell off, hitting her head and injuring her knee. She spent the night in the woods, she said, and found the cabin in the morning. Uccio was treated and released on the scene by medical staff.Mutual aide came from Butte, El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, Sierra, Yolo and Yuba counties on Saturday morning when Uccio was located.- Information from Lt.
